Reference rate only, not investment advice. Bitcoin's price can drop sharply. Local platform and P2P prices can differ from this reference. Gains on digital assets are taxable in Nigeria.
How to use the calculator
- Type an amount; the default is 1 BTC.
- Choose BTC, USDT or US dollar as the currency to convert from.
- The naira value appears instantly; type naira to convert the other way.
- Rates refresh while the page is open.
Fractions and satoshis
One Bitcoin divides into 100 million satoshis, so nobody needs to buy a whole coin. Try 0.001 or 0.0001 in the calculator to see what small amounts are worth. Withdrawal fees on the Bitcoin network are charged per transaction, not as a percentage, so very small amounts can be expensive to move.
Why local prices differ
| Reason | Effect |
|---|---|
| The calculator uses the global USD price × the dollar rate | A neutral reference, not a buy or sell quote |
| Official vs parallel naira rate | Local prices often follow the market rate for dollars |
| Spread on local platforms and P2P | You buy a bit higher and sell a bit lower |
| Fees and network costs | Reduce what you actually receive |
Buying and selling BTC in Nigeria
Crypto is legal to hold, and the Investments and Securities Act 2025 placed digital asset platforms under SEC oversight. Large international exchanges stopped naira services in 2024, so most Nigerians now use SEC-registered or provisionally approved local platforms, or P2P markets with escrow. What happened with the biggest exchange: is Binance banned in Nigeria.
- Choose an SEC-registered platform and complete identity checks.
- Deposit naira from your own bank account.
- Buy BTC or USDT, or sell and withdraw naira to your account.
- For long-term holding, move coins to your own wallet and keep the recovery phrase offline.
Tether in naira: USDT to naira. Fundamentals: what is cryptocurrency.
Worked example
Say you hold 0.002 BTC. Enter it in the calculator to see the reference naira value. If you sell on a local platform, subtract the trading fee and the spread; if you first send coins from your own wallet, subtract the Bitcoin network fee too. The naira that reaches your bank is usually a few percent below the reference figure, and more for very small amounts.
Tax
The Nigeria Tax Act 2025, in force from January 2026, treats gains on digital assets as taxable. Keep records of purchase prices, sale prices and fees so you can work out your gain. Rules are still being clarified for individuals, so ask a tax adviser if you trade regularly. Legal context: is crypto legal in Nigeria.
Scams to avoid
- Fake bank alerts when selling BTC P2P: confirm the credit in your bank app.
- "Bitcoin investment" with daily returns on WhatsApp and Telegram.
- Cheap BTC offers that require payment first.
- Fake support agents asking for your recovery phrase or OTP.
