Bitcoin mining in Nigeria
Bitcoin mining in Nigeria is not banned, but it is very hard to make profitable. A modern ASIC miner draws about 3.5 kW around the clock, grid supply is unreliable outside Band A feeders, and running a generator on petrol or diesel costs far more per kWh than the machine earns. Most people who "mine" in Nigeria actually rent hashrate through cloud mining offers, many of which are scams. This guide covers the legal status, the electricity maths in naira with a live calculator, hardware, tax and the red flags to watch.
General information, not investment advice. Mining profitability changes daily with the Bitcoin price, network difficulty and electricity cost. Never pay for a "mining plan" that promises fixed daily returns.
Is Bitcoin mining legal in Nigeria
There is no law that bans mining. The Central Bank lifted its instruction against bank accounts for crypto businesses in December 2023, and the Investments and Securities Act 2025 brought digital assets under SEC oversight. That framework targets exchanges and other service providers; mining your own coins is not a licensed activity in itself. Using stolen or bypassed electricity, however, is a crime, and illegal connections are the most common way small miners get into trouble. Broader rules: is crypto legal in Nigeria.
Electricity: the real problem
| Power source | Cost per kWh | Reliability |
|---|---|---|
| Band A grid supply | About ₦200 or more after the 2024 tariff review | Up to 20 hours a day |
| Lower bands | Cheaper | Far fewer hours, unusable for 24/7 mining |
| Petrol or diesel generator | Several times the grid price | Depends on fuel |
| Solar with batteries | High upfront cost | Daylight plus storage |
A miner that is off for hours each day earns proportionally less, while the hardware cost stays the same. That is why almost all serious mining happens in countries with cheap, stable power.

Hardware and import
Mining Bitcoin needs ASIC machines; laptops, phones and gaming PCs are millions of times too slow. New units cost thousands of dollars, and importing them adds shipping, customs duty and the exchange rate risk of buying in dollars with naira. Used machines are cheaper but less efficient and often arrive without warranty. An ASIC is also loud, about 75 dB, and pushes out heat that needs ventilation. Tax on mining income
The Nigeria Tax Act 2025, in force from January 2026, treats gains on digital assets as taxable. Coins you mine and later sell for naira can create a taxable gain, and running a mining business means company or personal income tax on the profit. Keep receipts for hardware, power and import costs. Rules for individuals are still being clarified, so check with a tax adviser.
Cloud mining scams
Because home mining rarely pays, many Nigerians are offered "cloud mining" instead: pay for a plan and receive daily payouts. Some legitimate hashrate rental services exist, but these signs mean a scam:
- Fixed daily returns such as 2% or 5% a day.
- Bonuses for recruiting friends who also deposit.
- Withdrawal blocked until you pay a "tax" or "upgrade fee".
- No company address, contracts or proof of real machines.
