Crypto airdrops: how they work
A crypto airdrop is a free distribution of tokens to wallets, usually to reward early users or attract attention to a new project. Some airdrops have given users real money; many give tokens worth almost nothing; and fake airdrops are one of the most common ways people lose wallets. Here is how airdrops work, how to take part safely and how to recognise a fake one.
How airdrops work
A project sets aside part of its tokens and sends them to selected wallets. The selection rules vary: holding another coin at a certain date, using the project's app before launch, completing quests, or collecting points in a game. The tokens arrive in your wallet or must be claimed on the project's site.
Types of airdrops
| Type | How you qualify |
|---|---|
| Retroactive | You used a product before it had a token |
| Holder | You held a certain coin or NFT at a snapshot date |
| Task or quest | Follow, join, test, refer |
| Points and games | Collect points in an app or Telegram game, converted later |
What airdrops are worth
Most airdropped tokens start trading at a price set by the market, and many fall after launch as recipients sell. A few have been worth a lot; most are worth a few dollars or less. Treat points and quests as a lottery ticket that costs time, not as income.
How to take part safely
- Use a separate wallet with only small amounts for airdrops.
- Get links only from the project's official site and verified channels.
- Never enter your seed phrase anywhere. A claim never needs it.
- Read what you sign in the wallet: a "claim" that asks to approve spending of all tokens is a drain.
- Ignore tokens that appear in your wallet from unknown projects with a link to "claim more".
Fake airdrops
- Ads and replies with a look-alike project name and an urgent deadline.
- "Connect wallet to check eligibility" sites that request unlimited approvals.
- Requests to pay a "gas fee" or "unlock fee" to receive tokens.
- Fake support accounts offering to help with a claim.
Airdrops in Telegram
Telegram tap games made point-based airdrops popular: players collected points for months, then received a token. Results varied widely. Before investing time, check who runs the game, whether there is a real plan for the token, and never pay to "boost" points. More on these games: Telegram games and mini apps.
A different model is TotalHash, a free mining game in Telegram that does not promise a future token payout: tasks and short ads pay small amounts of USD₮ and GRAM now, withdrawable to your own TON wallet.
Small rewards you can withdraw today, not someday.
