Crypto wallets explained
A crypto wallet does not store coins. Coins live on the blockchain; the wallet stores the keys that let you move them. That one fact explains the difference between hot and cold wallets, custodial and self-custody, and why losing a seed phrase means losing the money. This guide covers wallet types, how to choose one and how to keep it safe.
What a crypto wallet is
Every blockchain address has a private key. Whoever holds the key can sign transactions from that address. A wallet is software or a device that keeps those keys, shows your balances and signs transfers when you confirm them. Your "balance" is simply what the blockchain records for your address.
Custodial vs self-custody
| Custodial (exchange, some apps) | Self-custody | |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds the keys | The company | You |
| If you forget the password | Support can restore access | Only your seed phrase restores it |
| If the company fails or freezes accounts | Your coins are at risk | Not affected |
| Good for | Trading, buying and selling for local money | Holding and receiving payouts |
Hot vs cold wallets
- Hot wallets are connected to the internet: phone apps, browser extensions, wallets inside messengers. Convenient for everyday amounts.
- Cold wallets keep keys offline: hardware devices or paper backups. Best for savings you rarely move.
A common setup is a hot wallet for small amounts and a cold wallet for the rest, like a pocket wallet and a safe.
Hardware wallets
A hardware wallet is a small device that signs transactions inside itself, so the key never touches your computer. Buy only from the manufacturer or an official reseller, never second-hand, and set it up yourself: a device that arrives with a pre-written seed phrase is a scam.
How to choose a wallet
- Networks: make sure it supports the blockchains you use. USD₮ exists on several networks; the wallet must support the right one.
- Reputation: open-source or widely audited wallets with a long history.
- Official source: install from the official site or app store link; fake wallet apps are common.
- Recovery: a standard 12 or 24 word seed phrase you can back up.
For the TON network, popular choices are Tonkeeper and Wallet in Telegram; see TON wallet guide.
The seed phrase
When you create a self-custody wallet, it shows 12 or 24 words. Those words are the wallet: anyone with them can take your coins from any device, and without them nobody can restore your wallet. Write them on paper, keep them offline, and never type them into a website, a chat or a "support" form.
Safety checklist
- Nobody legitimate will ever ask for your seed phrase. Not support, not an exchange, not a game.
- Check the address before sending: malware can swap copied addresses.
- Send a small test amount to a new address first.
- Do not connect your wallet to unknown sites, and read what you sign.
- Keep a little of the network's coin for fees, such as GRAM on TON.
If you play TotalHash, a free mining game in Telegram, rewards from tasks and ads are withdrawn in USD₮ and GRAM to your own TON wallet. The game only needs your address, never your phrase.
Connect a TON wallet and withdraw small game rewards.
