Legal, regulated, banned: what the words mean
- Legal tender means shops must accept it. Almost nowhere is crypto legal tender.
- Legal to own means you will not be punished for holding it.
- Regulated means platforms need a licence and must follow rules, which gives you some protection.
- Not regulated means it is not banned, but if a platform fails, nobody will help you get money back.
- Banned or not permitted means trading can lead to fines or prosecution.
Rules that apply almost everywhere
- Tax: in most countries gains are taxable, and rewards received in crypto can count as income.
- KYC: licensed platforms verify your identity; anonymous ones carry more risk.
- Scams are not protected by any law: sending crypto to a fraudster is very hard to undo.
