What is USDT (Tether)?

6 min read

USDT, also called Tether, is a cryptocurrency designed to stay at about one US dollar. People use it to hold dollars without a bank account in dollars, to move money between exchanges, and to get paid by apps and clients abroad. This guide explains what USDT means, how it keeps its price, what TRC-20, BEP-20 and TON mean, and the risks.

USDT meaning and full form

USDT stands for "US Dollar Tether". It is issued by Tether, a company that says each token is backed by reserves: mostly US Treasury bills, cash and other assets. It is the largest stablecoin, a type of crypto whose price is tied to a regular currency. Bitcoin's price moves freely; USDT's price is meant to stay near 1 dollar.

How it stays at one dollar

  • Minting and redeeming: large clients can give Tether dollars and receive new USDT, or return USDT and receive dollars. If USDT trades below a dollar, traders buy it cheap and redeem it, pushing the price back up.
  • Reserves: Tether publishes regular reports on its reserves, checked by an accounting firm.
  • Trust: the peg holds as long as the market believes the reserves are there.

In practice USDT trades between about 0.99 and 1.01 dollars. In some countries the local price is higher because of demand for dollars, as explained in USDT to INR.

Networks: TRC-20, BEP-20, ERC-20, TON

TRC-20TRONLow, popular for P2P
BEP-20BNB ChainLow
ERC-20EthereumCan be high

It is the same USDT on every network, but an address on one network does not receive tokens sent on another. Always choose the same network on both sides and test with a small amount.

What people use it for

  • Saving in dollars where the local currency loses value.
  • Receiving payments from clients, platforms and games abroad.
  • Moving money between exchanges quickly.
  • Paying for services that accept crypto.

Risks

  • Issuer risk: USDT depends on one company and its reserves.
  • Freezing: Tether can freeze USDT at addresses linked to crime, which is good against scammers but means USDT is not fully censorship-free.
  • Regulation: in the EU, exchanges restricted USDT under the MiCA rules; other countries have their own limits.
  • Scams: fake "USDT mining" apps and "send USDT to verify" requests.
