What is a seed phrase?
What is a seed phrase? A seed phrase, also called a recovery phrase or mnemonic, is a list of 12 or 24 ordinary words that can recreate your crypto wallet on any device. Whoever knows those words controls the funds, which makes the seed phrase the single most important secret in crypto. This guide explains what a seed phrase means, how words become your keys, the difference between exchange accounts and self-custody wallets, how to store a seed phrase safely, why online generators and "wallet checkers" steal funds, and what to do if your phrase leaks.
Never type your seed phrase into a website, a chat, a form or a "support" bot. No legitimate wallet, exchange, airdrop or game will ever ask for it.
Seed phrase meaning
When you create a self-custody wallet, the app generates a random secret and shows it to you as a list of words. Writing those words down is your backup. If your phone is lost or broken, you install the wallet on a new device, enter the words in the same order, and your addresses and funds reappear. The words themselves are the wallet; the app is just a window into it. Basics of wallets: crypto wallets explained. If you are new to crypto: crypto for beginners.
How 12 or 24 words become your keys
Most wallets use the BIP39 standard, which has a list of 2048 words. A 12-word phrase encodes 128 bits of randomness, a 24-word phrase 256 bits, which is far more combinations than anyone could guess. From that phrase, the wallet derives private keys, and from private keys, your public addresses. TON wallets such as Tonkeeper use their own 24-word mnemonic scheme, so a TON phrase is not always interchangeable with other wallets. Addresses are explained here: what is a wallet address.
Exchange accounts vs self-custody wallets
| Feature | Exchange account | Self-custody wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who holds the keys | The exchange | You, through the seed phrase |
| Recovery | Email, password reset, support | Only with the seed phrase |
| Main risk | Exchange failure or account freeze | Losing or leaking the phrase |
Telegram's built-in wallet has both a custodial part and a self-custody option: TON wallet guide.
How to store a seed phrase safely
- Write it on paper, in order, with numbers next to each word.
- Store it in a safe place at home, and consider a second copy in another location.
- Do not take a photo, screenshot, or save it in notes, email or cloud drives.
- For larger amounts, consider a metal backup that survives fire and water.
- Do not tell anyone where it is unless you plan for inheritance.
Why online generators and checkers steal funds
"Seed phrase generator" websites may record every phrase they create, and "wallet checker" or "airdrop eligibility" pages that ask you to paste your phrase send it straight to thieves. Automated scripts then empty the wallet within seconds, often before you notice. Fake support accounts on Telegram and Discord also ask for the phrase to "sync" or "validate" your wallet. All of these are scams.
What to do if your phrase leaked
- Create a brand new wallet with a new seed phrase on a clean device.
- Move all funds from the old wallet to the new one immediately, starting with the most valuable assets.
- Revoke token approvals if your wallet supports it.
- Never reuse the old phrase again.
If the funds are already gone, transactions on a blockchain cannot be reversed. Report the theft to the police and keep the transaction hashes, but be wary of "recovery services" that ask for fees.
