Why USDT costs more than a dollar in India
The converter shows a reference rate: the global USDT price times the dollar to rupee rate. On Indian exchanges and P2P markets the price is often a few percent higher. The reasons are local:
- Tax friction. The 1% TDS on transfers and the 30% tax make traders price in their costs.
- Demand for dollars. Freelancers, students abroad and traders buy USDT as a simple way to hold dollars.
- Fewer sellers on some payment methods. UPI, IMPS and bank transfer buyers get different prices.
For you as a seller, this premium is good news: you may receive slightly more rupees than the bank rate. Compare two platforms on the same day before selling.
How to withdraw USDT to INR
- Use an exchange registered with FIU-IND. Since 2024 the government blocks offshore exchanges that are not registered. Registered platforms take KYC and deduct TDS automatically.
- Deposit USDT on a network the exchange supports. Send a small test first.
- Sell USDT for INR on the spot market or with the instant sell button.
- Withdraw INR to your bank by IMPS or NEFT from the exchange wallet. The money comes from the exchange, not from a stranger, which is the safest route.
Selling on a P2P market can give a better price, but read the next section first.
The bank freeze problem
In India, the biggest P2P risk is not losing the coins. It is receiving rupees that came from a cyber fraud victim. The victim files a complaint, the police trace the money, and your bank account is frozen, sometimes for months.
- Accept money only from a buyer whose bank name matches the verified name on the platform.
- Avoid buyers who pay from several accounts or in split amounts.
- Keep every trade record: order ID, chat, bank statement. They help if a freeze happens.
- For larger amounts, sell on the exchange order book instead of P2P.
30% tax and 1% TDS
As of October 2026, India taxes gains from virtual digital assets at a flat 30%, plus cess, under section 115BBH of the Income Tax Act. Losses cannot be set off against other income. On transfers above the yearly threshold, 1% TDS is deducted under section 194S; registered exchanges do it for you, and it shows in your Form 26AS. Rewards you receive in crypto can count as income when you get them. Keep a simple sheet with dates, amounts and prices, and check the Income Tax Department site or a tax professional, because the rules change with budgets.
Choosing the network
USDT runs on TRON (TRC-20), BNB Chain, Ethereum, TON and others. Indian exchanges do not support every network, so check the deposit page before you send. If your exchange does not accept USDT on TON, move it through an exchange that does, and only then to India. Each hop costs a network fee, so do it with larger amounts, not every few dollars.
